Very few towns can boast the sophistication of housing first-rate
educational institutions, some of the nationās best art museums, one of
the finest theatre festivals AND an independent film house right in the
center of town. Images Cinema is one of the few remaining single-screen,
independent theaters still in operation. Not only an historic part of
the Northern Berkshires, this theater is part of the legend of cinema in
America. Images Cinema offers you an exceptional variety of independent,
foreign and classic films, year-round.
We really need your membership dollars. The membership fund will help
support this nonprofit cinema when ticket sales are not sufficient to
cover operating expenses. Your membership will ensure the survival of
this historic institution.
The Challenge of Independent Film
As an independent cinema, we struggle to carve out a space in an
industry overwhelmed by multiplexes. Acquiring films from distributors
is difficult for a small, hometown theater without the clout of a large
corporation. We not only compete with other cinemas, we rival
television, video and the internet for your attention. Independent film
÷ a film not financed by a major Hollywood studio ÷ is free to be an
expression of ideas and creative photography. The films we feature are
movies that have, and will continue to have, an effect on filmmaking for
years to come.
Though this area boasts a great concentration of motivated and
intelligent film lovers, the fact remains that we are located in a
community with a very small population. Ticket sales alone can no longer
sustain Images Cinema. Like museums, the admission fee at a nonprofit
film house does not cover the expenses incurred securing quality pieces
for a relatively small audience. And, like museums, art theaters respond
to this financial reality by depending on membership dollars and
charitable donations. Communities and individuals support art in this
country, whether expressed on canvas, in concert halls, or on the
transparent frames that run through a projector onto a screen. The
question: Do you want to have continued access to independent and

HISTORY
Help Preserve History
On November 30, 1916, the Walden Theatre first opened its doors. The
theaterās grand entrance on Spring Street welcomed patrons into the
impressive 400-seat house. This momentous event brought Williamstown to
the cultural forefront of the Berkshires. In the early 20s, an eager
audience was treated to silent film performances by Billie Burke,
Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops. The late 20s brought talkies to
the screen. From the romantic detectives of the 40s to Westerns of the
50s to the pop culture movies of the 70s, Images Cinema has brought you
the latest and greatest of the film world. Unlike the Mohawk, the Opera
House and the Colonial Theatre, for more than 80 extraordinary years,
Images Cinema has survived the challenges of an ever-changing culture.
As a community, it is our responsibility to make sure this historical
institution continues to thrive.
